I'm not fan of DOL pressings, but this one sounds very good. Flat and quiet, no distortion. The sound is clear, even on the piano. Very good surprise. For 10 euros, i's a bargain.

It is a good thing to be weary of releases on the DOL label as they are known to use varied digital sources and exploit copyright law. That being said, this is not a terrible sounding release. I was given this LP as a gift and am pleasantly surprised at the sound quality. It actually sounds pretty good. Decent bass frequencies and no distortion to speak of. Which is more than I can say about some offfical US Impulse! Reissues. Who am I kidding, this thing sounds great for what it is and for the low list prices ($11-14).
The cover quality is not great. Thin card stock and low res image sources leave much to be desired. If you're on a tight budget, this is a perfectly good and listenable LP. I know other releases on the DOL label have not been nearly as nice, so caviat emptor (as Mike Brady once told me).
On to the music... this is an absolutely stellar release by Coltrane and crew. Coming of the heels of the sublime My Favorite Things, Coltrane hits heavier on Africa/Brass with original compositions and an augmented band that includes French Horn, tuba and 2 basses giving these tracks a much more powerful effect than can be found in his previous work. The title track gets a bit crazy, hinting at his future free jazz period but unlike said later work the Trane never completely leaves the tracks. I love the interplay between this group of diverse musicians on this record, it's like mixing Coltrane with a big band with just the right amount of crazy improv.
On Greensleeves, Coltrane picks up the soprano sax which can't help but make one recall My Favorite Things. Fantastic rendition as expected.
One nice thing about this DOL release is the addition of The Damned Don't Cry and Songs of the Underground Railroad, which were not included on the original LP. Again, this speaks to some strange digital source but it's hard to complain about more JC for your money. Still...were these tracks part of the artists vision for the album?
As an inexpensive reissue goes, this is a solid release. It won't complete with your 2 disc 45 rpm analog sourced reissue but If you find this in the $15 range, its solid yet mixed bag. As far as the music goes, I know this is going to be a favorite of mine.

This follows on nicely from Ole. Not the most accessible music, but I find it totally absorbing, mind bending stuff. Fantastic.

Africa/Brass is the first John Coltrane record I ever bought. It thoroughly perplexed me.

I was maybe 15 or 16 and way into the Grateful Dead. I read an interview with the band's bass player, Phil Lesh, where he spoke about how he turned his band mates onto Coltrane, specifically via Africa/Brass. I came to learn over the years that the band was incredibly impacted and influenced by Coltrane's early '60s work and that happenstance introduction started me on my exploration.

I was not entirely unfamiliar with or ignorant about jazz at the time, but I had a very, very superficial exposure. I can't even recall what I may have been aware of at the time but there was certainly nothing like Africa/Brass in my consciousness.

What I initially picked up was a cassette tape. This was the mid-80s and if I recall correctly, none of the Impulse! stuff was in print any longer, certainly not on CD. If it was available I wasn't stumbling across it...anyway, I purchased said used cassette and was eager to see what mind-boggling music could have possibly so motivated my musical heroes.

I wish I could say that I was immediately drawn in and absorbed by the music, but that was not the case. The music was incredibly dense to my ears, not at all what I thought "jazzy" should be. Even "Blues Minor", the most bop-like track on the record, was left-of-center for me. Quite frankly, I was confused. Not put off, but thoroughly confused.

I kept that cassette tape for years. As my interest in and knowledge of music grew I would revisit Africa/Brass. I wish I could recall when I finally "got it" but it probably did not take as long as my memory implies. By the early 90s Coltrane was already a familiar reference point to me and had prepared me for some of my favorite records, such as Sonny Sharrock's Ask The Ages and McCoy Tyner's Fly With The Wind.

Those endless hours of Frank Zappa, the Grateful Dead and various heavy prog rock records did a great job of teaching me how to listen to and appreciate this other world of music, though. I love it all.

One of my favorite Coltrane releases. Africa is such a strong track on it's own that if they reissued this as a 3" CD I'd still buy it for $15. It's a great example of Modal/Bop jazz and you never get bored through out the 16+ minutes. His take on Greensleeves is just as great. He starts off with the main movement of the traditional track, then goes into his own free style saxophone, then back with the original movement to end. It follows with another great track, Blues Minor. This release is a great starting point for any new Coltrane fan because it was a point were Coltrane started to do his own thing as an artist and he was also making statements within his albums as well, and Impulse! was letting him.
